There are different types of moisturizers, be it in the form of anti-aging ingredients, body creams, face creams, facial moisturizers, lotions, oils or ointments and even sunscreens. Each different moisturizer products are specifically designed according to our different skin types.<\/p>\n\n<p>But first, why is it so important to use a moisturizer?<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>MOISTURIZER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Moisturizer\u00a0<\/strong>helps hydrate your skin. With a moisturizer, you can finally address your skin concerns ranging from dehydration, dryness, lack of oil and water. It helps to\u00a0<strong>improve your skin hydration, protect your skin barrier and reduce skin problems.<\/strong>\u00a0Without moisturizer, your skin can become dry and you may experience inflammation.<\/p>\n\n<p>People that experienced flaking and redness (dry skin) will require moisture. Those with oily skin should stick with water-based moisturizers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Your surroundings and where you live can also affect your skin, which requires you to find the perfect moisturizer for your skin.<\/p>\n\n<p>But how exactly do moisturizers function? Are there different types of moisturizers? How do I find the perfect moisturizer for my skin type? We have\u00a0<strong>Humectants, Emollients and Occlusives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>1. Humectants:<\/strong><strong>Attract<\/strong>\u00a0water and pull water into your skin.<br \/><strong>Function<\/strong>\u00a0as hydration and slows down the process of water evaporation from the skin.<br \/>If you use skincare products that contain alcohol or soaps before, look for humectants moisturizers.<br \/>The lightest type of moisturizer.<br \/><strong>Examples of Humectants:<\/strong>\u00a0Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), Amino Acids, Glycerine, Glycerol, Hyaluronic Acid, Lactic Acid, Panthenol, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Thermal Water and Urea.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>2. Emollients:<\/strong>Can be oily, light or heavy depending on the formulation.<br \/>Can be found in gels, lotions and ointments.<br \/><strong>Hydrate and locks<\/strong>\u00a0water into your skin.<br \/>Known as lightweight oils.<br \/>Oil-based.<br \/><strong>Rebuild<\/strong>\u00a0the lost lipids in your skin.<br \/><strong>Smooths<\/strong>\u00a0your skin texture.<br \/><strong>Strengthens<\/strong>\u00a0your skin barrier and prevents water loss.<br \/><strong>Examples of Emollients:<\/strong>\u00a0Alcohol Benzoates, Capric Triglycerides, Ceramides, Cholesterol, Fatty Alcohols, Fatty Esters, Plant oils and Squalene.<br \/><strong>Suggestion: Use RehLa\u2019s Hydra Essential Moisturiser<\/strong>\u00a0as it contains Caprylic\/Capric Triglyceride.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>3. Occlusives:<\/strong><strong>Bantuan<\/strong>\u00a0create a layer over the skin and prevent water from evaporating.<br \/>Highly\u00a0<strong>recommended<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>dry skin<\/strong>\u00a0or those experienced\u00a0<strong>with severe dryness like<\/strong>\u00a0Eczema.<br \/><strong>Protect<\/strong>\u00a0the top layer of your skin to keep the water in.<br \/>Much thicker than Emollients.<br \/><strong>Examples of Occlusives:<\/strong>\u00a0Beeswax, Cocoa Butter, Lanolin, Dimethicone, Mineral Oil, Paraffin, Petrolatum, Plant Waxes, Shea Butter and Silicones.<\/p>\n\n<p>You should always think about whether your moisturizer is\u00a0<strong>water-based or oil-based. Water-based\u00a0<\/strong>are light-weight and\u00a0<strong>oil-based<\/strong>\u00a0are creamier and thicker, specifically meant for drier skin.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>DIFFERENT TYPES OF FORMULATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>There are\u00a0<strong>different benefits and textures based on the different types of formulations used in moisturizers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>1. Creams:<\/strong>Contains Humectants, more Emollients and Occlusives.<br \/>Has a lower water percentage.<br \/>Thicker in consistency and texture.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>2. Gels:<\/strong>Contains Emollients and full of Humectants.<br \/>Has a higher water percentage.<br \/>Lightweight in texture.<br \/>Usually oil-free.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>3. Lotions:<\/strong>Contains Emollients, more Humectants and fewer Occlusives.<br \/>Easily absorbed.<br \/>Has a high water percentage.<br \/>Lightweight in texture.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>4. Milks:<\/strong>Contain Humectants and Emollients.<br \/>Fast absorption.<br \/>Has a high water percentage.<br \/>Similar to lotions but has more flow and runnier.<br \/>Thinner in consistency and texture.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>OTHER TYPE OF MOISTURIZERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>1. Moisturizer in Sunscreens:<\/strong>Choose a non-greasy formula so you can wear makeup on top of it comfortably.<br \/>Consider physical sunscreen rather than chemical sunscreen as physical sunscreen deflects UV rays and doesn\u2019t use chemicals to absorb for it to reach your skin.<br \/>Known as Mineral sunscreens, it includes Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide<br \/>Look for a sunscreen that has SPF 30 or higher.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>2. Natural and Organic Moisturizer:<\/strong>To be safe, look for a moisturizer that includes at least 95% natural or organic ingredients.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>3. Tinted Moisturizer:<\/strong>Choose the closest or right shade to your natural skin tone to obtain a glowing complexion.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>HOW TO APPLY MOISTURIZER ON YOUR SKIN?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>1. In upward motions, lightly spread on your cheeks and chin.<\/p>\n\n<p>2. In upward directions, apply to nose then layer on your forehead.<\/p>\n\n<p>3. In upward motions and using gentle strokes, apply to your neck.<\/p>\n\n<p>4. Avoid pulling or tugging your skin downward.<\/p>\n\n<p>5. Don\u2019t rub the moisturizer too hard on your face.<\/p>\n\n<p>6. Acne and Oily skin:<\/strong><strong>Avoid<\/strong>\u00a0heavy Emollients such as Lanolin, Mineral Oil and Petrolatum as it can clog up pores and develop acne on your skin. Don\u2019t forget to avoid Occlusives as well!<br \/><strong>Avoid<\/strong>\u00a0Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid because it will produce more oil on your skin.<br \/><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0non-comedogenic products as it\u2019s less likely to clog pores.<br \/><strong>Look<\/strong>\u00a0for active ingredients such as Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs).<br \/><strong>Look<\/strong>\u00a0for oil-free labels, with Humectants like Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerine and Urea.<br \/>Those who have acne and oily-prone skin should choose a lighter texture or water-based gels and lotions.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>2.Combination skin:<\/strong><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0a moisturizer that fulfils your cheek and T-zone areas on your face.<br \/><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0a lightweight moisturizer.<br \/><strong>Limit<\/strong>\u00a0the number of products and steps.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>3.Dry skin:<\/strong><strong>Avoid<\/strong>\u00a0alcohol and too many acids like AHAs and BHAs.<br \/><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0oil-based moisturizers like Jojoba or Safflower as it will preserve and help maintain water in your skin.<br \/><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0thicker texture creams.<br \/>Humectants such as a gentler form of AHAs or Lactic Acid will help preserve your skin\u2019s natural moisture.<br \/><strong>Look<\/strong>\u00a0for a combination of Humectants, Emollients and Occlusives.<br \/>Ceramides, Glycerine, Hyaluronic Acid, Lanolin, Oatmeal and Propylene Glycol are excellent for drier skin types.<br \/>Urea is great at softening toughened Keratin and helps retain water on your skin.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>4.Mature (Aging) skin:<\/strong>Anti-oxidants, AHAs and Retinols help reduce flaky and scaly skin.<br \/>Anti-aging moisturizers can hydrate and make your skin look youthful.<br \/><strong>Choose<\/strong>\u00a0oil-based moisturizer as it helps to maintain moisture.
